More than 12,500 Brussels residents affected by metro disturbances — An underestimated problem

Our estimates indicate that noise and vibration from the STIB metro affect more than 12,500 residents in Brussels, spread across half of the city’s municipalities: Anderlecht, Auderghem, Brussels-City, Etterbeek, Koekelberg, Molenbeek, Woluwe-Saint-Lambert and Woluwe-Saint-Pierre. Had the M7 trains continued to be deployed on lines 2 and 6, up to two-thirds of Brussels municipalities would have been affected.

Thanks to our interactive map, you can visualise the affected areas along the metro network, based on a simulation using official data.

You can display the population by district by clicking on the 'layers' icon in the top right of the map, then selecting "Brussels Population Grid."

The map and the estimation are based on official sources:

  • Metro lines and stops: Good Move Observatory
  • Population data: StatBel
  • Addresses of affected residents: complaints to IBGE, Ombudsman and Justice of the Peace

It should be noted that this estimate remains incomplete: it only considers residents of Brussels and ignores workers, students, or visitors who are exposed to the same disturbances during the day without living there.

Although this simulation cannot account for all parameters (such as soil composition that can dampen vibration or the proximity of curved track sections that can amplify them), it provides an overall view of the problem. The disturbances are not limited to a few isolated complaints: they affect thousands of people in Brussels.

If you too are affected by the metro nuisances, take action and make your voice heard.
